What is the lamina propria?
The lamina propria is one of three layers which make up the mucosa, or mucous membrane. The lamina propria is a large layer of connective tissue which separates the innermost layer of epithelial cells from a layer of smooth muscle tissue called the muscularis mucosa.
How is acute lamina propria inflammation defined?
Lamina propria inflammation was defined as acute only if there was an increase in polymorphonuclear cells without an increase in lymphocytes and plasma cells. It was defined as mixed when there was an increase in neutrophils, lymphocytes, and plasma cells. Click to see full answer.
What is the pathophysiology of Crohn’s disease lamina propria?
Studies of the mechanisms of this defect focusing on cells from patients with Crohn’s disease showed that Crohn’s disease lamina propria lymphocytes from inflamed tissues express the same amount of cell surface Fas but are less sensitive to Fas-mediated apoptosis than control cells.
Why is the lamina propria modified in the intestines?
In the intestines, there is less of a need gas exchange. Instead, the lamina propria is modified to allow the passage of a large number of ducts, which connect to the liver, pancreas and salivary glands. These ducts allow the passage of materials needed for digestion.
