Wat houdt Muharram in?
Muharram (Arabisch: محرم) is de eerste maand van het jaar van de islamitische kalender en is een van de vier heilige maanden van het jaar. De maand verschuift door de verschillende seizoenen, omdat het een maanmaand betreft. De wortel van het woord is afgeleid van haraam (verboden).
Hoeveel dagen moet je vasten op Ashura?
10 Muharram. Het wordt volgens de islam aanbevolen om een dag te vasten. Het is toch ook een gezellige dag, want veel mensen zoeken elkaars gezelschap op. Niet alleen in huis, maar ook op straat. Op de ochtend van Asjoera kun je beter niet op straat vertonen.
Waarom Ashura?
In het soennisme wordt tijdens Asjoera herdacht dat de profeet Musa (Mozes) zijn volk (de Israëlieten) van Egypte naar Kanaan leidde, waardoor ze werden bevrijd van de onderdrukking door de farao. Tijdens Asjoera wordt vaak gevast, hoewel dit niet verplicht is.
Hoeveel Muharram?
Tegenwoordig wordt de kalender echter veelal berekend. Hiertoe hebben de maanden afwisselend 30 en 29 dagen. [*] De hier gegeven datum van 30 juli 2022 voor Muharram (Islamitisch Nieuwjaar) is berekend volgens de Umm al-Qura kalender van Saoedi-Arabië. De datum kan in sommige landen 1 dag afwijken.

Muharram-The Month of Mourning: Imam Reza (A. S.) said: With the advent of the month of Muharram, my father Imam Kazim (A. S.) would never be seen laughing; gloom and sadness would overcome him for (the first) ten days of the month; and when the tenth day of the month would dawn, it would be a day of tragedy, grief and weeping for him.
Are there special prayers and acts for Muharram?
Many of us are not aware that just like Sha’ban, Ramadan, and the other holy months, there are special prayers and acts prescribed for the first ten nights of Muharram. Among others, Shaikh Abbas Qummi narrates in Mafatih al-Jinan from Shaikh Tusi that it is highly recommended to fast during the first nine days of Muharram.
