Waar komt het woord achilleshiel vandaan?
De achillespees dankt zijn naam aan Achilles, de beroemde held in de oorlog tegen Troje uit de Griekse mythologie. Om hem onkwetsbaar te maken had zijn moeder, de zeenimf Thetis, hem in de rivier de Styx gedompeld. Ze hield hem hierbij vast aan zijn hiel, waardoor deze niet in aanraking was geweest met het water.
