Wat is rijpe staar?
Wanneer staar niet tijdig wordt verholpen, gaat u alles wazig zien en kunt u uiteindelijk alleen nog licht en donker onderscheiden. Dit noemt men rijpe staar.
Hoe werd staar vroeger behandeld?
Tot halverwege de 18e eeuw werden cataractpatiënten behandeld met een staarsteek, waarbij de troebele lens door een naald naar beneden, het glasvocht in werd geduwd. De ingreep gaf vaak slechte resultaten en veel complicaties.

Wat zijn de verschijnselen van staar? Wazig zien, zowel van dichtbij als van veraf. Kleuren zijn vaal en minder helder, soms iets geel of bruin. Soms dubbelzien als u met één oog kijkt.

What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. For people who have cataracts, seeing through cloudy lenses is a bit like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. Clouded vision caused by cataracts can make it more difficult to read, drive a car (especially at night) or see the expression on a friend’s face.
What happens during cataract surgery?
During cataract surgery, your eye surgeon will remove your eye’s cloudy natural lens. Then he or she will replace it with an artificial lens. This new lens is called an intraocular lens (or IOL). When you decide to have cataract surgery, your doctor will talk with you about IOLs and how they work.
How are cataracts treated?
Surgical methods used to remove cataracts include: Using an ultrasound probe to break up the lens for removal. During a procedure called phacoemulsification (fak-o-e-mul-sih-fih-KAY-shun), your surgeon makes a tiny incision in the front of your eye (cornea) and inserts a needle-thin probe into the lens substance where the cataract has formed.
Is the lens of the eye clear during cataract surgery?
Normally, the lens of your eye is clear. A cataract causes the lens to become cloudy, which eventually affects your vision. Cataract surgery is performed by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) on an outpatient basis, which means you don’t have to stay in the hospital after the surgery.
