Wat is Brut IPA?
Het bier werd voor het eerste gebrouwen in San Francisco en verovert sinds 2017 mondjesmaat de rest van de wereld. Brut is een zeer droge champagne en bij de bierstijl Brut IPA gaat het dan om de combinatie van de hoppigheid van een IPA en de droge body van champagne.
Wat is champagne bier?
Champagnebier is een ondergistend speciaalbier die een lange rijping hebben ondergaan. Over het algemeen zijn het Belgische bierbrouwers die deze bijzondere bierstijl brouwen door toevoeging van suikers en champagnegist. Sommige worden zelfs gerijpt in grotten in de champagnestreek van Frankrijk.
Wat is champagne gist?
Het grootste verschil tussen champagnebier en bier In champagnebier zit er ook vaak zo’n 10 keer meer gist in (champagnegist), dan je normaal doet met biergist. Daarbij ook dubbel zoveel suiker, wat volledig wordt vergist. Dit leidt tot een hoger alcoholisch bier (rond de 11-12% alcohol) met veel koolzuur.
How do you make a Brut IPA?
Brut IPA should be pale and dry. Start with a pale base malt, add some rice, corn, or sugar and you’re done. It’s really that simple. There are several ways to get a dry finish in a beer. Starting in the mash, it makes sense to use a lower mash temp. Shoot for 143 – 146 F (61.6 – 63.8 C). Plan for a 90 minute mash for reasons we’ll cover next.
Does Brut IPA have too much alcohol?
Particularly, because Brut IPA is so dry, too much bitterness is undesirable. These beers should be hoppy in aroma and flavor with just a kiss from the alpha acids. While examples vary in how boozy they are, the best are found in a pretty narrow range of 6-6.5% ABV. Too much alcohol creates too much sweetness.
Why are brut IPAs only available on draft?
But it remains a beer that’s primarily available on draft only. And that’s for good reason. Like many beers where the fresh hop aromas and flavors are key, Brut IPAs are best when young, which generally means the optimal way to enjoy them is on tap.
Is the new Brut IPA the West Coast’s answer to hazy IPA?
While some see the new Brut IPA as the West Coast’s answer to hazy, or New England, IPA, it doesn’t appear to be that simple. Brut IPAs are hopped similarly, and both want an end product that’s not overly bitter. Bruts are lighter in color, and decidedly less sweet, but can also be somewhat cloudy, just not as impenetrable as a Heady Topper.
