Een netwerkmasker, subnetmask of ook wel netmask is een binair getal dat wordt gebruikt om een scheiding, ofwel subnet aan te brengen in de IP-adressering. De IP-adressen binnen dit subnet vallen binnen hetzelfde broadcast-domain. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat een broadcast niet over het gehele internet wordt verzonden.

Waar dient een subnet voor?

Door de subnetmaskers weten de routers in het netwerk op welk fysiek segment zich een bepaald adres bevindt, en dus waarheen de gegevens voor dat bepaalde adres moeten worden gerouteerd. Elk IP-adres in een subnet start in de binaire notatie met hetzelfde binaire getal. Dit getal geeft het netwerk-ID weer.
