Waar lag Vinland?
Vinland (Letterlijk in het Oudnoords: Wijnland) was de naam die is gegeven aan een deel van Noord-Amerika door de IJslandse Viking Leif Eriksson, omstreeks het jaar 1000. Later is archeologisch bewijs van een Vikingkolonie gevonden in L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada.
Waarom was Leif Erikson belangrijk?
Leif Eriksson (Oudnoords: Leifr Eiríksson; c. 970 – c. 1020) was een IJslandse ontdekkingsreiziger die wordt beschouwd als de eerste Europeaan die, bijna 500 jaar eerder dan Christoffel Columbus, voet zette op Noord-Amerikaanse grond (met uitzondering van Groenland).

The site was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1978. Vinland, Vineland or Winland ( Old Norse: Vínland) was an area of coastal North America explored by Vikings. Leif Erikson first landed there around 1000 CE, nearly five centuries before the voyages of Christopher Columbus and John Cabot.

It was also spelled Winland, as early as Adam of Bremen’s Descriptio insularum Aquilonis (“Description of the Northern Islands”, ch. 39, in the 4th part of Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum), written circa 1075.
