Door de sportieve opmars van de Königsblauen werd in 1928 een nieuw stadion in gebruik genomen, de Glückauf-Kampfbahn, dat ingewijd werd met een prestigewedstrijd tegen Tennis Borussia Berlin. Doordat de stad Gelsenkirchen het stadion betaald had, werd de naam van de club nu voluit FC Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04.
