Waar leven Dingos?
Wilde hond Zo’n 4.000 jaar geleden namen Aboriginals, inwoners van Australië, dingo’s mee terug van hun reizen naar Azië. Sommige dingo’s ontsnapten en verwilderden in de Australische natuur. Inmiddels leeft de dingo als een soort wolf in de Australische bossen en woestijnen.

Hoe ziet een dingo eruit?
De vachtkleur varieert tussen licht zandkleurig en donker roodbruin. Op borst, snuit, buik en voeten bevinden zich witte vlekken. De grote bossige staart heeft vaak een witte punt. Bij Australische dingo’s ligt het gewicht van mannetjes gewoonlijk tussen 11,8 en 19,4 kg.
Hoe is de Tasmaanse tijger uitgestorven?
De Tasmaanse tijger kwam ooit voor in heel Australië en op Nieuw-Guinea. Maar de Europeanen joegen op het beest omdat hij schapen zou doden. De laatste bekende Tasmaanse tijger werd in 1933 gevangen en overgebracht naar de dierentuin op het eiland. Drie jaar later stierf het dier, waarschijnlijk door verwaarlozing.

The Australian Dingo is thought to have contributed to the disappearance of the Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacine) on mainland Australia, as dingoes competed for the same food sources, and they were more successful, depriving Thylacines of food. Modern-day dingoes will tend to hunt smaller animals such as rabbits and Red foxes.
Why are dingoes being banned in Australia?
The dingoes were dubbed ‘death-row dingoes’, and the plan was blocked due to concerns for a locally threatened shorebird. Owners of dingoes and other domestic dogs are sometimes asked to neuter their pets and keep them under observation to reduce the number of stray/feral dogs and prevent interbreeding with dingoes.
Can you shoot dingoes on private land in Australia?
The order allows dingoes to be trapped, shot or baited by any person on private land in these regions, while protecting the dingo on state-owned land. Western Australia: Dingoes are considered as “unprotected” native fauna under the Western Australian Wildlife Conservation Act.
