Wat veroorzaakt bacteriële vaginose?
Bacteriële Vaginose is de meest voorkomende oorzaak van vaginale infecties bij vrouwen in de vruchtbare leeftijd en wordt veroorzaakt door bepaalde bacteriën die de natuurlijk balans in je vagina verstoren. Hierdoor kun je last krijgen van een sterke vaginale geur en ongewone afscheiding.

Megasphaera bacteria (type 1 and type 2) are highly associated with bacterial vaginosis, and in one study using PCR testing, were found in higher concentrations (up to five times more) in those with BV than those without. Megasphaera are gram-negative anaerobic bacteria, part of Clostridia genus.
Is Megasphaera a pathogen?
Megasphaera species are also found in the mouth, and are not thought to be pathogens, but exist with other bacteria in a colony. These bacteria can adhere to cells, but virulence genes have not been identified.

The beer-spoilage group Megasphaera includes three species: Megasphaera cerevisiae, Megasphaera paucivorans and Megasphaera sueciensis. Megasphaera mainly affects unpasteurized low-alcohol beers by producing C5 and C6 fatty acids, H 2 S and turbidity. The growth rate of M. cerevisiae is reduced above 2.1% (w/v) and pH below 4.1.
