Wat is ziekte van Coats?
De ziekte van Coats is een zeldzame, niet-erfelijke netvliesafwijking (retinopathie) gekenmerkt door de aanwezigheid van uitgerekte bloedvaten (retinale teleangiectasieën: deze bloedvaten is vergelijkbaar met een uitpuiling in een fietsenband). Deze teleangiectasieën zijn waarschijnlijk aangeboren.

Harde exsudaten: Dit zijn achtergebleven lipiden uit het bloed, nadat de bloeding weer is geresorbeerd.
Wat is Funduscontrole?
Door middel van fundusfotografie worden foto’s gemaakt van het netvlies van uw ogen. Daarvoor wordt een speciale fotocamera gebruikt. Het maken van de foto’s gebeurt in een verduisterde kamer en gaat gepaard met een flitslicht; net zoals flitsfoto’s thuis.
Wat is milde achtergrond retinopathie?
De bloedvaatjes van het netvlies worden bij langdurig verhoogde glucosewaarden vaak het eerst aangetast. De netvliesschade ontwikkelt zich in verschillende fasen van kwaad tot erger. Eerst zijn er gedurende enkele jaren lichte bloedvat-veranderingen die u niet merkt (achtergrond retinopathie).
