Andere namen zijn Lateral medullary syndrome (LMS) of PICA syndroom. Een herseninfarct of bloeding (beroerte) in het verlengde merg, onderdeel van de hersenstam, is specifiek benoemd als het syndroom van Wallenberg (of Wallenberg syndroom) ook wel het lateraal medullaire syndroom genoemd.
Wat is Wallenberg syndroom?
Het syndroom van Wallenberg is een bijzondere vorm van een beroerte, waarbij er een infarct optreedt in een bepaald deel van de hersenstam. Hierdoor treedt een bepaald symptomencomplex op, dat reeds in 1808 werd beschreven door Gaspard Vieusseux.
