De staatstaal en de lingua franca is het Mandarijn, maar daarnaast zijn er nog zo’n 3000 talen en dialecten, die zeer verschillend kunnen zijn.
Wat is een Kantonees?
Het Kantonees of Yue is een van de Chinese talen. De taal heeft honderden varianten, dialecten die per dorp of subdistrict verschillen. Het Kantonees dat men meestal bedoelt, is het Hongkong-Kantonees of het Standaardkantonees (ook wel Guangzhouhua).
Waar komt een Kantonees vandaan?
Kantonezen vormen een groep mensen behorende tot de Han-Chinezen, wier voorouderlijke oorsprong ligt in Guangdong, China. Dit volk kent als taal het Kantonees (of Yue), dat een van de Chinese talen is.
Is Mandarin the new Cantonese in Hong Kong?
Currently about 70 percent of Hong Kong’s primary schools use Mandarin as the language of instruction and there have even been reports of videos being used in classrooms that demonize Cantonese and promote Mandarin. In large part this is because in Hong Kong Mandarin is slowly coming to be seen by some as a more useful language than Cantonese.

In 1996 it was reported that 65,892 residents in Hong Kong spoke Mandarin as their first language; 20 years later, in 2016, that number has risen to 131,406 residents: a 99.4 percent increase.
Is Cantonese the same as Hong Kong speech?
Although the Hong Kong people largely identify this variant of Chinese with the term “Cantonese” (廣東話), a variety of publications in Mainland China describe the variant as Hong Kong speech (香港話).
Is Cantonese dying out in Hong Kong?
Now everywhere “Chinese” is used as an official language — China, Taiwan, Singapore, and the UN – that means Mandarin, making it the most spoken language in the world. Simply put, if you enroll in a Chinese class overseas, it is a Mandarin class. With all this being said, though, Cantonese is by no means in danger of dying out in Hong Kong.
