Als eerst wordt er bij het maken van een planning een script breakdown van het scenario gemaakt. Alle scènes worden genummerd (initial breakdown) om een opnameplanning te kunnen maken. Het script wordt hierbij vaak eerst opgedeelt in 1/8ste delen. Dit wordt gedaan om de lengte van een scene in te kunnen schatten.
