Waar komt de kerstster vandaan?
De kerstster of poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is een plant uit de wolfsmelkfamilie (Euphorbiaceae). De soort komt van oorsprong voor in Mexico maar wordt veel gekweekt om de sierwaarde. Hij wordt in de gematigde streken, waaronder de Benelux, voornamelijk gekocht voor de kerst.
Hoe groeit een kerstster?
Dit speelt zich af tijdens de late wintermaanden en in maart. In april wordt de plant in verse potgrond overgepoot en komt hij weer zichtbaar tot leven. Er verschijnen nieuwe scheuten en hij groeit mooi uit. Als de kerstster zo ver is kan hij in principe in bloei worden gebracht.
Hoe vaak moet je een amaryllis water geven?
In het begin zal uw Amaryllis niet zoveel water vragen, maar houd haar toch in de gaten en geef water als u ziet dat de grond droog wordt. Vooral als ze op of dichtbij de kachel staat kan de grond snel droog worden. Ook als u nog geen groei ziet houden de wortels ervan om in een vochtige grond te staan.
