Hoe werkt een ECMO?
Het ECMO systeem is een apparaat wat bloed van de patiënt door een kunstlong pompt. Tijdens de ECMO behandeling neemt de ECMO een deel van het werk van het hart en de longen over. Het bloed wordt via een van de canules uit het lichaam gehaald, waarna het door de kunstlong wordt gepompt.

Oxygenation is treatment to increase oxygen supply to the lungs and to blood circulation. ECMO removes carbon dioxide waste from the blood and returns oxygen-rich blood back to the body.

Guidelines that describe the indications and practice of ECMO are published by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). Criteria for the initiation of ECMO vary by institution, but generally include acute severe cardiac or pulmonary failure that is potentially reversible and unresponsive to conventional management.
Hoe wordt een hart long machine aangesloten?
Voor aansluiting van de hart-longmachine krijgt de patiënt een bloedverdunnend middel toegediend, waardoor het bloed onstolbaar is gemaakt. Hierdoor wordt het mogelijk het bloed dat op het operatieterrein vrijkomt, in en rond het hart, weg te zuigen naar het extracorporaal circuit.
Hoe lang aan de ECMO?
ECMO is een vereenvoudigde vorm van een hartlongmachine. ECMO wordt sinds 1976 gebruikt om enkele dagen tot weken of zelfs maanden het lichaam te ondersteunen. De functie van hart en longen wordt overgenomen zodat deze de tijd krijgen te herstellen.
Is polio besmettelijk?
Polio wordt veroorzaakt door drie typen poliovirussen. Het virus wordt van mens op mens overgedragen door besmet voedsel, besmette ontlasting of besmet water of door kleine druppeltjes in de lucht. De infectie kan leiden tot verlammingen.
