Hoe ontstaat vocht in het hartzakje?
Door de ontsteking wordt de binnenwand van het hartzakje gezwollen en ruw. De wrijving van de vliezen over elkaar is pijnlijk. Ook kan er als reactie op de ontsteking een toename van de hoeveelheid vocht tussen de vliezen ontstaan waardoor het hart minder ruimte heeft om zich goed te vullen met bloed.

Als er (te) veel vocht in het hartzakje komt, heeft het hart niet meer genoeg ruimte om het bloed goed rond te pompen. Het vocht kan bloed of ontstekingsvocht zijn. Oorzaken hiervan zijn: ontsteking van het hartzakje (pericarditis), waarbij veel ontstekingsvocht vrijkomt.
