Welke landen vieren Lunar New Year?
Niet alleen in China en Taiwan, maar ook in veel Chinatowns in de wereld wordt het gevierd. Tegelijkertijd vieren andere Oost-Aziaten, zoals Koreanen en Vietnamezen hun nieuwjaar. Ook Mongolen en Tibetanen (losar) vieren het op dezelfde datum.

In China zelf wordt het Chinese Nieuwjaar 春节 (chūnjíe) genoemd wat Lentefestival betekent. In 2021 valt het Chinese Nieuwjaar op vrijdag 12 februari. Volgens de Chinese kalender begint in 2021 het jaar van de os. Het nieuwjaarsfestival duurt in 2021 van 12 februari tot 26 februari.

Why does China celebrate New Year with Gregorian calendar?
Beginning in 1949, under the rule of Chinese Communist Party leader Mao Zedong, the government forbade celebration of the traditional Chinese New Year and followed the Gregorian calendar in its dealings with the West. But at the end of the 20th century, Chinese leaders were more willing to accept the Chinese tradition.
