Wat is een open ductus?
Bij een open ductus Botalli, ook wel persisterende ductus arteriosus genoemd, sluit de ductus (een bloedvat tussen de longslagader en het afdalende gedeelte van de aorta) niet in de eerste dagen na de geboorte, zoals dat hoort. De ductus speelt een belangrijke rol bij de circulatie van het bloed bij de ongeboren baby.

De ductus arteriosus is een verbinding tussen de longslagader en de grote systeemslagader (aorta). Dit kanaaltje is noodzakelijk gedurende de zwangerschap. De longen oefenen tijdens de zwangerschap geen functie uit en worden ‘gebypassed’ door de ductus arteriosus. Na de geboorte sluit de ductus normaal spontaan.

Voor de geboorte is er een open verbinding tussen de aorta en de longslagader, de ductus Botalli. Normaal sluit de opening binnen enkele uren tot 3 dagen na de geboorte. Als de verbinding na de geboorte open blijft, is er sprake van een open ductus Botalli (ODB).
