Waar komt de naam Azoren vandaan?
Ontdekking en kolonisatie Rond 1450 volgde de ontdekking van de centrale en westelijke eilanden. De Azoren heeft zijn naam te danken aan de havik (Acor), helaas vergiste de eerste eilandbewoners zich in de vogel. Het bleek namelijk een buizerd te zijn en geen havik, echter de naam Azoren is gebleven.

De Azoren werden vroeger de Vlaamse eilanden genoemd; ze werden immers in de 15de eeuw gekoloniseerd door Portugezen en Vlamingen. Nu zijn de Azoren vooral gekend vanwege hun hogedrukgebieden die ons weer beïnvloeden.
