Hoe ontstaat IgA-nefropathie?
IgA-nefropathie is een auto-immuunziekte. Ze ontstaat door een opstapeling van het antilichaam immuunglobuline A (IgA) in de nieren. De ziekte kan op elke leeftijd ontstaan, maar de oorzaak is nog grotendeels onbekend.
Is IgA-nefropathie erfelijk?
Bij sommige mensen komt de ziekte van Berger voor in de familie. Erfelijkheid speelt dan een rol. Deze vorm van de ziekte wordt ook wel ‘familiaire IgA-nefropathie’ genoemd.
Hoe vaak komt IgA-nefropathie voor?
Een IgA-nefropathie kan op iedere leeftijd optreden, maar wordt vooral gezien bij mensen tussen de 20 en 40 jaar. Het komt vaker voor bij mannen dan bij vrouwen. Één op de 50.000 mensen in Nederland heeft een IgA-nefropathie. De meeste mensen komen bij de arts in verband met zichtbaar bloedverlies in de urine.
Wat is IgA waarde?
Een bepaald type antistoffen (IgA) is van belang voor een goede afweer in slijmvliezen. De meeste mensen met een tekort aan deze afweerstoffen hebben daar weinig of geen last van maar een gedeelte van de mensen heeft vaker infecties in de oren, luchtwegen en darmen. Ook hebben zij vaker auto-immuunziekten.

What are the symptoms of IgA nephropathy?
After many years, deposits of IgA may cause the kidneys to leak blood and sometimes protein in the urine. In the early stages, IgA nephropathy has no symptoms. The first sign of this condition may be blood in the urine. After 10 to 20 years, the kidneys may show signs of damage and 20-40% of adults develop end-stage kidney disease.
