Inhoudsopgave
Hoe ontstaat Clostridium difficile?
Is C diff the same as Clostridium?
C. diff (Clostridioides difficile) Clostridioides difficile [klos–TRID–e–OY-dees dif–uh–SEEL] is formerly known as Clostridium difficile and often called C. difficile or C. diff. C. diff is a germ (bacterium) that causes severe diarrhea and colitis (an inflammation of the colon).
What is the pathophysiology of Clostridium difficile?
C lostridium difficile is a Gram positive, spore forming anaerobic bacillus that in contrast with popular belief is not a normal commensal of the adult gastrointestinal tract. 1 The organism is acquired from an exogenous source and given certain conditions can induce disease.
What is the aetiological agent of Clostridium difficile?
Clostridium difficile is the major aetiological agent of antibiotic associated diarrhoea and colitis. The majority of hospitalized patients infected by C. difficile are asymptomatic carriers who serve as silent reservoirs for continued C. difficile contamination of the hospital environment.
What is the prognosis of Clostridium difficile (C diff) infection?
The majority of hospitalized patients infected by C. difficile are asymptomatic carriers who serve as silent reservoirs for continued C. difficile contamination of the hospital environment. C. difficile associated disease (CDAD) is a serious condition with mortality up to 25 per cent in frail elderly people.
