Siri werd oorspronkelijk als project ontwikkeld door de afdeling kunstmatige intelligentie van SRI International. Het onderdeel spraakherkenning werd ontwikkeld door Nuance Communications en maakt gebruik van machinaal leren om te kunnen functioneren.
