Wat is de parachute?
“parasjuut” [para’ʃyt] of parasjute [para’ʃytə]) is een hulpmiddel waarmee iets of iemand in het zwaartekrachtveld van een hemellichaam zijn snelheid kan afremmen door wrijving met de atmosfeer. Men spreekt van parachutespringen of valschermspringen wanneer een persoon een valscherm gebruikt.
Wie heeft parachute ontdekt?
De parachute van Da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was een van de eersten die een schets maakte van een prototype parachute. Zijn model, dat hij rond 1483 uittekende, had een soort piramidevorm. Later is het door Da Vinci geschetste model getest, in 2000 en nog een keer in 2010, en het bleek goed te werken.

In theory, skydivers could open their parachute as low as 600ft when falling at terminal velocity, which, in practice, not even extreme athletes have tried to achieve so far. Besides the falling speed, the lowest possible altitude to open a parachute depends on the jumping height, the experience of the skydiver, and the material of the canopy.
How do reserve parachutes work?
The reserve parachute is connected to the system in a pretty elegant way: in the event that it has to be deployed, it uses the drag of the departing main parachute to speed up the rate of the reserve deployment. The amount of time it takes the reserve parachute to deploy and fly is, in fact, usually pretty negligible.
