Algeldraat en de magnesiumzouten magnesiumcarbonaat en magnesiumhydroxide binden maagzuur en neutraliseren hierdoor de maaginhoud. Algeldraat is aluminiumoxide in een vorm die zuur makkelijk kan binden. De combinatie wordt gebruikt bij maagklachten, zoals brandend maagzuur.
