Waar ligt Sakhalin?
Sachalin (Engels: Sakhalin, Russisch: Сахалин) is een eiland, gelegen tussen de Zee van Ochotsk en de Japanse Zee (Azië). Sachalin maakt deel uit van Rusland. De hoofdstad van Sachalin is Joezjno-Sachalinsk (Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk).

Geografie. Sachalin wordt van het Russische vasteland gescheiden door de Tatarensont, die op zijn smalst 7,3 kilometer meet en in de winter dichtvriest. Het Japanse eiland Hokkaido bevindt zich aan de overzijde van de Straat van La Pérouse. Het eiland is 948 kilometer lang en 27 tot 170 kilometer breed.

Karafuto was the name of a prefecture integrated into the Japanese state in 1943. It had been a colonial territory since 1910, when it was ceded by the humilated Russian Empire. It was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1945, and annexed to the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in 1951 after Japan renounced all claims to Sakhalin.
