What is a geode?
(A Quick Recap) Geodes are hollow rocks that oftentimes contain a beautiful collection of crystals and minerals inside the cavity. And depending on the types minerals that find their way into the geode determines what kind of crystals are formed, such as amethyst, agate and quartz.
How do you find geodes?
1 Look for rocks with a bumpy texture. When you’re searching, you want to look for lumpy rocks. 2 Search for rocks that are round or egg-shaped. While they may not be perfectly round, geodes tend to be round or oval-shaped. 3 Check the rock’s weight. 4 Be prepared to dig a little.
How do you open a geode with a hammer?
Place your chisel in the middle of the rock and lightly use your hammer to make small indentations around the circumference of the rock. Keep chiseling in a circle around the rock until you see a crack form, and then follow the crack with your chisel and hammer until it cracks open. Put your geode in a sock before hammering it to avoid a mess.

A couple of the most common types of rock that geodes can be found in are basalts and limestones. Now It takes more than just a sealed air pocket formation inside of a rock for a geode to be formed. In order for that void to ultimately become a geode, crystals must begin to form inside it.

What is the best way to break a geode?
First up is the blunt force method. A very simple way to crack a geode is simply to place the geode inside of a sock or fabric bag to contain the soon to be broken pieces. With the geode in a bag, gently striking the geode with a rock-hammer, sledgehammer, or even a harder rock should facture the geode just enough to crack it open.
How to open a geode with a chisel?
With the chisel, slowly tap your way around the circumference of the rock. The idea here is to only score the edge and not crack it open just yet. Once the outside of the geode is scored around the entire circumference, more forceful blows on a second go around should eventually open the geode around the score line that you made with the chisel.
Can you split a geode in half?
With the geode in a bag, gently striking the geode with a rock-hammer, sledgehammer, or even a harder rock should facture the geode just enough to crack it open. With this method, your geode will most likely end up in a few different pieces. With a little practice and some luck, you might be able to split a geode in half.
