Waar Westnijlvirus in Nederland?
In oktober 2020 is voor het eerst een besmetting met het westnijlvirus gevonden bij een patiënt in Nederland. De patiënt heeft het virus waarschijnlijk in de regio Utrecht opgelopen door een muggenbeet. In deze regio zijn in augustus en september 2020 vogels en muggen gevonden met het westnijlvirus.

Het West-Nijlvirus circuleert al onder vogels in Europa en de Culex-muggen die de ziekte op paarden overbrengen komen wijdverspreid over heel Europa voor. Omdat een dergelijke uitbraak zich op elk moment kan voordoen, is vaccinatie de enige manier om de kans dat een paard aan de aandoening bezwijkt te verkleinen.
