Kan een schwannoom groeien?
Wanneer het schwannoom groter wordt, neemt het steeds meer ruimte in en zal het op de zenuw die in de buurt kunnen gaan drukken en klachten veroorzaken. Schwannomen groeien meestal in een heel langzaam tempo.
Kan een schwannoom terugkomen?
Als tijdens een operatie zekerheid bestaat dat de tumor voor 100% is weggenomen is de kans dat de tumor terugkomt vrijwel nihil. Echter, om sommige functies te sparen, bijvoorbeeld die van de aangezichtszenuw, wordt soms met opzet een (klein) deel van de tumor achtergelaten.
Hoe groot is een schwannoom?
Een brughoektumor wordt ook wel vestibularis schwannoom of acousticus neurinoom genoemd. Een brughoektumor is een goedaardig gezwel met een zeer langzame groei. (1-2mm per jaar). In Nederland wordt per jaar bij ongeveer 170 patiënten (10 per miljoen inwoners) voor het eerst de diagnose brughoektumor gesteld.

Schwannoma is a rare type of tumor that forms in the nervous system. Schwannoma grows from cells called Schwann cells. Schwann cells protect and support the nerve cells of the nervous system. Schwannoma tumors are often benign, which means they are not cancer.
What are the treatments for schwannoma?
Other treatments, such as radiation, may be used in some cases. Malignant schwannomas may be treated with immunotherapy and chemotherapy medications as well. If a schwannoma develops on a smaller nerve, it may not be possible to separate the tumor from the nerve.
What tests are used to diagnose schwannoma?
If signs suggest that you could have a schwannoma or other nerve tumor, your doctor may recommend one or more of these diagnostic tests: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This scan uses a magnet and radio waves to produce a detailed, 3-D view of your nerves and surrounding tissue.
What is the prognosis of schwannoma?
The prognosis may vary depending on the type and location of the schwannoma, as well as whether or not the tumor is cancerous. If muscle weakness occurs in an area affected by a schwannoma, the affected muscle might not regain full strength after the tumor is removed.
