Wat zijn medjool dates?
Dadels zijn de vruchten van een dadelpsalmboom, ook wel palmboombessen. De dadelpalm wordt in het Latijn ook wel de Phoenix dactylifera genoemd. Het zijn vruchten met een hoge voedingswaarde en ze komen oorspronkelijk uit het Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika.
Welke soorten dadels?
Dadels worden vooral geteeld in Noord-Afrika en de Arabische landen, maar ook in Californië en Australië. Soorten dadels die het meest worden verhandeld zijn Deglet Nour, Hallawi, Khaleseh en Medjool. Deze komen overwegend uit Egypte, Californië, Palestina en Israël.
Waarom Medjoul dadels duur?
Medjoul dadels zijn groter, zachter en een stuk smaakvoller en liggen bij het verse fruit. De kleine harde variant is vaak bewerkt (gekonfijt), medjoul dadels zijn dat niet. Dat is ook gelijk de reden waarom medjoul dadels een stuk prijziger zijn. Het telen en oogsten van deze dadels is erg arbeidsintensief.
