Er zijn diverse oorzaken voor de loslating van de nagel. Een aantal voorbeelden zijn: een verminderde bloedtoevoer, huidziekten, trauma, infectie, kanker, geneesmiddelen. Eerst wordt het gebied tussen de nagelplaat en het nagelbed rood en daarna komt de nagel los van het nagelbed.
