What is rotablator and how does it work?
Rotablator is a therapeutic procedure where a very tiny “football-shaped” device attached to the tip of a tiny catheter is advanced to a heavily calcified segment of a coronary artery and rotated at high speed (up to 200,000 rotations per minute) to remove the calcium in coronary artery plaques.
What is rotablator rotational atherectomy?
The Rotablator Rotational Atherectomy System is a catheter-based angioplasty device utilizing a diamond-coated elliptical burr at the tip of a flexible drive shaft. Tracking coaxially over a guidewire and rotating at up to 190,000 RPM, the burr ablates plaque into fine particles that are disposed of by the body’s reticuloendothelial system.
What happens during rotablation?
Sometimes, when the plaque is particularly hard, or is so narrow that the balloon can’t pass through it, rotablation may be used. Again, a very fine wire is guided through the narrowing. After this, a special catheter (a thin tube) is inserted along the wire with a tiny drill at its tip, powered by compressed air.
What is a rotablator catheter procedure?
During rotational atherectomy, the rotablator is guided to the blockage via a catheter – a thin, flexible, hollow plastic tube small enough to be threaded through a blood vessel. Your doctor may feel the particular plaque formation closing off one of your arteries can be managed better using a rotablator procedure (RP).
