Een Franse krant publiceerde per ongeluk het overlijdensbericht van Nobel. Hierin werd Nobel ‘de handelaar in de dood’ genoemd. Nobel vond het maar niets dat hij zo herinnerd zou worden. Ter compensatie bedacht hij een reeks prijzen voor mensen die uitmuntend gepresteerd hebben in de wetenschap.
