Wat is een Atheroom?
Een atheroomcyste is een veel voorkomend goedaardig huidgezwel dat voornamelijk voorkomt bij volwassenen. Het gezwel is een holte in de huid met daarin een ophoping van gekweekte hoornschilfers. Deze ophoping wordt veroorzaakt doordat de normale uitgang van de haarfollikel en zijn talgklier afgesloten raakt.
Wat is een cyste gezicht?
Met verstopte talgklier wordt bedoeld een bult ergens op de huid die is ontstaan doordat er een haarzakje met een bijbehorend talgkliertje verstopt is geraakt. Er ontstaat dan een zakje onder de huid gevuld met rommel die er niet uitkan. Dit zakje (ook wel cyste genoemd) wordt langzaam steeds groter.
Waarom wordt een atheroomcyste verwijderd?
Atheroomcysten zijn ontsierend, maar veroorzaken in een vroeg stadium weinig klachten. Toch zijn er verschillende redenen waarom patiënten vragen een atheroomcyste te verwijderen, zoals toename in grootte, storend esthetisch aspect, riekende drainage en soms acute of chronische ontstekingsverschijnselen.
