Waar wordt acetylcholine gemaakt?
Deze neurotransmitter wordt zowel in het centrale- als perifere zenuwstelsel teruggevonden. Het neuron neemt Choline op waarna het door het enzym ‘choline acetyltransferase’ aan acetyl coenzyme A wordt gekoppeld zodat acetylcholine wordt gevormd.
Wat doet acetylcholine in het zenuwstelsel?
Acetylcholine is de enige neurotransmitter die instaat voor de overgang van zenuwimpulsen uit de hersenen en het zenuwstelsel op de spieren. Deze neurotransmitter stuurt de spieren dus aan. Dat betekent meteen ook dat er zonder acetylcholine geen spiercontractie mogelijk is.

The name acetylcholine is derived from its structure. It is a chemical compound made up of acetic acid and choline.
How do acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (Achei) work?
Drugs called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEI) inhibit this enzyme from breaking down acetylcholine, thus increasing both the level and duration of action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. There are two types of acetylcholine (aka cholinergic) receptors: muscarinic (very important in the brain) and nicotinic receptors.
Who discovered acetylcholine?
Acetylcholine is not only the most common chemical messenger, but it was also the very first neurotransmitter to be identified. It was discovered by Henry Hallett Dale in 1914, and its existence was later confirmed by Otto Loewi. Both individuals were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine in 1936 for their discovery.
How do medications affect acetylcholine levels?
Certain medications can increase levels of acetylcholine. They do this by blocking the action of enzymes that break down the neurotransmitter. The primary enzyme in this group is called acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and drugs that make these enzymes less active are called AChE inhibitors or cholinesterase inhibitors.
