Waar komt western red cedar vandaan?
Het naaldhout Western Red Cedar is afkomstig uit Westelijk Noord-Amerika (Canada en VS) en wordt ook wel de Reuzenlevensboom (botanische naam: Thuja plicata) genoemd. Deze boom, uit de cipresfamilie (Cupressaceae), kan een extreme leeftijd bereiken.
Waar groeit Red Cedar?
De western red cedar groeit ten westen van de Cascade Mountains in de regenwouden langs de kust tot aan de Rocky Mountains. In deze bossen vinden we western red cedar, gemengd met hemlock en voorts sitka spruce en douglas.
Waar komt cederhout vandaan?
Ceders komen van nature voor in de westelijke Himalaya (1500-3200 m) en het Middellandse Zeegebied (1000-2200 m). Ceders zijn bekend vanwege het lichte, duurzame hout. Het heeft een zeer aangename geur, die lang aanwezig blijft. Een ceder kan tot 40-50 m hoog (soms 60 m) worden.
