Het eerste popfestival in de buitenlucht is in Lochem. In 1969 is tijdens Pinksteren op de Gulpenerberg een evenement genaamd Pinknick. Het jaar erop wordt een professioneler evenement georganiseerd en ontstaat het oudste festival van Nederland: Pinkpop. Nederlands eigen Woodstock vindt pas in 1970 plaats.
