Na het starten met prednison heeft u al snel veel minder klachten. De medicatie (prednison) wordt dan langzaam (in 2 tot 3 jaar) afgebouwd. Dit geldt echter niet voor iedereen. Het kan zijn dat prednison bij u onvoldoende werkt en dat de klachten van de PMR na verloop van tijd toch weer terugkomen.

IL-6 appears to have a central role in mediating inflammation.[12] IFN may be present in temporal artery biopsy in patients with GCA but not in patients with PMR, suggesting its role in the development of arteritis.[13]
